The fraction is not the minutes
2.5 hours is 2 hours 30 minutes, not 2 hours 5 minutes. The decimal part is a fraction of 60, so you multiply rather than read it off:
- minutes = fractional part × 60
- seconds = the leftover fraction of a minute × 60
0.1 hours is 6 minutes. 0.25 is 15. 0.75 is 45. The habit of reading 7.30 as "seven thirty" is where most payroll disputes start.
The arithmetic
The value is converted to seconds first, then split:
- total seconds = value × seconds per unit
- hours = whole part of total ÷ 3600
- minutes = whole part of the remainder ÷ 60
- seconds = what is left
A span of 1.5 days becomes 36:00:00 — hours are not wrapped at 24, because a 36-hour span is not the same statement as 12:00:00 the next day.

Frequently asked questions
- What is 2.5 hours in hours and minutes?
- 2 hours 30 minutes. The whole number is the hours, and the fraction times 60 gives the minutes — 0.5 × 60 = 30.
- What is 7.75 hours in hours and minutes?
- 7 hours 45 minutes, because 0.75 × 60 = 45. This is the most common timesheet total after 7.5, which is 7 hours 30 minutes.
- Why does 0.1 hours come out as 6 minutes rather than 10?
- Because an hour has 60 minutes, not 100. A tenth of an hour is 6 minutes. Treating decimal hours as if they were minutes is the single most common timesheet error.
- Can I enter a negative value?
- Yes. A negative decimal is treated as a span running backwards and shown with a leading minus, which is useful when reconciling an over-recorded shift.
